Robert (Bob) Turner, a professional baseball and basketball player, became the first full time Recreational Director for the City of Cornwall in 1957, and was the first Black person hired as a recreation director in Canada.

Mr. Turner worked diligently to promote sports, arts, recreational activities and the importance of recreational services in Cornwall. Much of his work became the template for future programs. One of his major initiatives was the launch of the Cornwall Minor Hockey Association.

An arena and facility for arts and recreation was constructed in 1961. With the sudden passing of Mr. Turner in 1962, the City chose to name the arena in his honour, The Bob Turner Memorial Centre.

Since the demolition of the Bob Turner Memorial Centre in 2011, there have been numerous suggestions to find a way to commemorate Mr. Turner. Currently, there is a display case at the Benson Centre which displays artifacts from the Bob Turner Memorial Centre and provides a brief history of Bob Turner.

A local fundraising initiative has been organized with the goal of collecting funds to help fund a project to commemorate Mr. Turner.

Please provide feedback in the form below. The anonymous data collected will be used for decision making.
